I could stand to lose a few pounds, but I don't need a diet. I was looking more for nutritional kinds of stuff that would be beneficial whether or not I'm hyperthyroid, hypothyroid, or without a thyroid issue at all.

It's not a bad guide. There's I knew going into this that this book would be primarily about hypothyroidism, since weight gain is a common issue for those suffering with hypo. There's some good stuff in here. A lot of it is common knowledge, or common sense, but there's nothing wrong with having a reminder.

There are things I haven't thought much about, even though it's somewhere in the back of my mind, like how not all fruits are all great, and some are better than others, that whole Glycemic Index thing - such as strawberries are lower on the GI scale than bananas or grapes. I'm not cutting grapes out of my lifestyle, though. I've seen a few criticisms about this that there aren't that many recipes. I get that, but nowhere on the cover does it say it's a cookbook. What Shomon includes here are a few options for breakfast, lunch, and dinner - again, it's a nice guide.

Something to work with. Start small, research more, figure out what works, and expand upon that.

This is no bible, and keep in mind that Shomon is no doctor. She's a patient advocate for people with thyroid and other autoimmune diseases; I still don't know much about her, even though I've now read two of her books, but I like that she's out there spreading some information to help people better understand what they're going through.

I'm still early on in my research, and I realize there's plenty of misinformation out there. Shomon seems to be keeping up with the research and thyroid news which is sort of exciting. Beyond some of the stuff in this book that I already knew, there were a few things I learned about thyroid disease that I hadn't heard yet, or hadn't experienced myself yet.

One other little-known issue for thyroid patients it he seasonal variation in thyroid function.

A number of studies show that TSH naturally rises during colder months and drops to a low normal or even a hyperthyroid level in the warmest months. Some doctors adjust for this by prescribing slightly increased dosages during colder months and reducing dosages during warm periods.

Most, however, are not aware of this seasonal fluctuation, leaving patients suffering worsening hypothyroidism symptoms during colder months, or going through warmer months suffering with hyperthyroidism symptoms due to slight overdosage. Still a lot of talk about supplements and holistic approaches, weight loss techniques across the field - from exercise to stress-reduction techniques to weight loss supplements to you-name-it.

Not everything was applicable to my own life or my own experiences, but no two cases of any sort of thyroid or autoimmune disease is going to be the same.

I just wanted information on what to eat and what wasn't so great for thyroid patients. That's a few pages in the back. My daughter was diagnosed with hypothyroidism at the age of Her weight gain was astronomical and energy levels so low, people thought she was just lazy. Thanks to her new doctor her thyroid was the first thing she tested.

Still struggling with energy levels and weight my daughter researched several books and chose this one. What a great book! The first thing she started was the liquid vitamins. Her energy has doubled.

Now she's working on her weight, slowing changing 1 thing at a time based on the books suggestions. It is a slow change but she couldn't be happier to have some kind of guide to help her ever step.

I have lived with the first edition and just ordered the revised edition. When I was first diagnosed with hypothyroidism, I found Mary Shomon's website and learned about my condition and the best way to stay healthy.

Her diet book provides that information about the best way to loose weight for someone who is hypothyroid. She is hypothyroid so her advise is not only scientifically sound but comes from a first person perspective. I continue to use her books and website to stay healthy. It is not an exciting read and it made me feel slightly overwhelmed by all I should be doing to help my thyroid problem from diet to supplements to checking if many other things are out of balance too.

It could be a full time job managing my health. It did help me determine which blood test to ask my doctor to order. You Should Have This Book.Things that usually would work for losing weight don't apply to people with thyroid disorders for the most part.
