It gets choked up with all the quotes and principles, then tends to repeat itself over and over again. Okay, we understood on page 5 what a great and ingenius company Starbucks was BUT, de Great quotes and principles for customizing your business to make a great experience for your clients, BUT, the book is horribly horribly written! BUT, despite the style criticisms, the author has some laid out some decent principles and insights. The 5 principles that structure the book and aim to "turn the ordinary into extraordinary" are: Make it your own 2.
Everything matters 3. Embrace resistance 5. Leave your mark "we are responsible for unleashing a passion that ripples outward from behind the scenes, through the customer experience, and ultimately out into our communities. Jan 07, Ryan Watkins rated it really liked it Shelves: The author explains how Starbucks focuses on providing an experience for its clients instead of just a product. He continues to explain in more detail his 5 principles on how to accomplish this in your own business: Much of his advice is helpful despite there being a lot of filler about specific clients' experiences at Starbucks and his push for businesses to support left leaning social issues.
Readi The author explains how Starbucks focuses on providing an experience for its clients instead of just a product. Reading the introduction, the Ideas to Sip at the end of each chapter, and "a final word" would suffice for understanding the authors' ideas. Apr 12, Melanie rated it really liked it Shelves: I picked up this book because one of the essays in the book, The Frugal Librarian, described how it's concepts could benefit libraries. I agree that libraries of all kinds could benefit by applying the five customer service principles from this book.
I think "be welcoming, be genuine, be considerate, be knowledgeable, and be involved" page sums it up well. I recommend it to any organization focused on customer service.
Sep 05, Adi Arifin rated it really liked it. This is an inspiring book on how setting our difference and pay every attention needed to keep it consistently makes a huge difference. I understand that many business do not really care about brand and brand image. But in the industry I am in, having our brand recognized for reliability is above anything else. Tourism industry is one thing, but being in premium layer, a very thin layer at the top of the pyramid, such as Bali villas is another story.
Jadi kurang menarik lagi.. This book hold many spiritual Wounder and contains many thoughtful Idea of how to be a Muslim, a Human and how to from all the things you have in your life, as some things you gain for your own right.
This one of the book that at first I judge it by the cover, but turn out it's a real treasure in my opinion. Apr 05, Cindy Payler rated it really liked it. How can we provide that? We want to be loved. Jul 01, Katy rated it liked it. I didn't even realize I had this on my bookshelves until I was clearing it out. So, along with most of the non-fiction I've read this year, I decided to give this a-go.
Honestly, since I am a big coffee drinker especially with Starbucks, the title is what intrigued me the most when I initially bought it and reading it now. I thought the book was fair. I mean, what do you expect to get from a book that is about a business except a fairly subjective book about said business practices? That said, I I didn't even realize I had this on my bookshelves until I was clearing it out. That said, I've read similar books, and the angle of this one made me appreciate Starbucks more but also feel like I was reading some sort of Inception-centric marketing campaign.
There was just so many layers unearthed about Starbucks' practices, the genuine commitment of hardworking baristas, and it's branding, at certain chapters it would strike me in an alarming way just how much the book fell into the same tone of the company's commitment of it's image.
While like I said what could be expected about a book selling the ideals of such a successful company, but I just wish it had a more of an objective perspective. Every chapter reflects those principles, but it's almost so-on-the-nose, that I wondered if this was written by someone at the top of the ladder by Starbucks even if I read the author's bio. The book could've been an inspirational manual while still being more balanced and a lot less sugar-coated in repeating just how much and why Starbucks is such a success.
Yes, readers will understand how Starbucks sets itself apart and embedded itself into the world community. I will also have a new appreciation to Starbucks, especially their employees, and I don't think I'll walk into a store the same way. The book definitely gave me a lot to think about in terms 'branding', as a blogger, etc. Aug 22, Abigail rated it really liked it.
Feb 13, Josh Miller rated it really liked it. I do not frequent Starbucks on a regular basis; however, I have been intrigued over the years by its success.
After reading this book, it is no wonder Starbucks is successful as they have been. The author is not affiliated with Starbucks in any way other than a Starbucks customer. I personally believe every church and pastor could learn truths in this book that would assist them in I do not frequent Starbucks on a regular basis; however, I have been intrigued over the years by its success.
I personally believe every church and pastor could learn truths in this book that would assist them in reaching more of their community for Christ. The five principles that Starbucks operates on are: Make it your own. Everything matters.
Surprise and delight. Embrace resistance. Leave your mark. I really enjoyed the chapter on Surprise and Delight. The chapter with the biggest impact for me was the chapter entitled "Leave Your Mark.
I couldn't help but think how important that philosophy is for churches and yet is an opportunity that is so often missed. Whatever you think about Starbucks before you read this book will definitely be challenged after comprehending what they are all about. Their company is not about the coffee As the author quotes a Starbucks partner on p.
Apr 26, Zoffix Znet rated it did not like it. The whole thing reads like a very long Starbucks advert. I found no practical advice in the book. There's a gazillion stories about how Starbucks employees give out free coffee when they see a customer spill their drink or give out free coffee presses when a customer asks for a replacement part. Perhaps Starbucks—a successful business—can afford to absorb those costs, but there's very little relevance in those stories for some lesser-known, non-restaurant businesses.
Starbucks packaged their CDs into paper—instead of plastic—cases, because plastic just "isn't Starbucks. Starbucks employee shared a lotto jackpot with other employees when they bought the card together. Starbucks asked an author of a critical article to elaborate on the problems the author experienced That's how the book reads to me.
Perhaps, I was expecting something different from the book. Feb 09, Anna rated it liked it Recommends it for: I've read all the Starbucks books I can get my hands on, so I'm going to compare this one to it's cousins. It's full of business jargon and vague concepts that business writers love so much.
See a Problem?
In trying to decipher the tools of Starbucks' success, however, the book manages to make the Starbucks Experience sound like a management class for government employees. Especially in business circles where you need lots of fodder for your weekly meetings I've read all the Starbucks books I can get my hands on, so I'm going to compare this one to it's cousins.
Especially in business circles where you need lots of fodder for your weekly meetings, and your morale is low. Explaining how this meteoric company has been so successful and how you can change your company to do that is the essence of this book's usefulness.
For me, used to a military leadership style, it was much too fuzzy and vauge to use in my leadership toolbox. Also, it doesn't really help front-line workers much us grunts at the bottom because it's not very actionable to day-to-day rountine work.
Like, how is "Leave your mark" going to help you to make the 40 beverages you have sitting in your queue in the morning, smile at the customers, and remember all of their names?
Not so much. But if you're a manager looking for some motivation for you and your team, sure "Make it your own" makes sense.
