Okay, we understood on page 5 what a great and ingenius company Starbucks was BUT, de Great quotes and principles for customizing your business to make a great experience for your clients, BUT, the book is horribly horribly written! BUT, despite the style criticisms, the author has some laid out some decent principles and insights. Reading the introduction, the Ideas to Sip at the end of each chapter, and "a final word" would suffice for understanding the authors' ideas. I agree that libraries of all kinds could benefit by applying the five customer service principles from this book.

I think "be welcoming, be genuine, be considerate, be knowledgeable, and be involved" page sums it up well. I recommend it to any organization focused on customer service.

I understand that many business do not really care about brand and brand image. But in the industry I am in, having our brand recognized for reliability is above anything else. Tourism industry is one thing, but being in premium layer, a very thin layer at the top of the pyramid, such as Bali villas is another story.

How can we provide that? We want to be loved. Jul 01, Katy rated it liked it. I didn't even realize I had this on my bookshelves until I was clearing it out. So, along with most of the non-fiction I've read this year, I decided to give this a-go.

Honestly, since I am a big coffee drinker especially with Starbucks, the title is what intrigued me the most when I initially bought it and reading it now. I thought the book was fair. I mean, what do you expect to get from a book that is about a business except a fairly subjective book about said business practices? That said, I I didn't even realize I had this on my bookshelves until I was clearing it out. That said, I've read similar books, and the angle of this one made me appreciate Starbucks more but also feel like I was reading some sort of Inception-centric marketing campaign.

There was just so many layers unearthed about Starbucks' practices, the genuine commitment of hardworking baristas, and it's branding, at certain chapters it would strike me in an alarming way just how much the book fell into the same tone of the company's commitment of it's image.

While like I said what could be expected about a book selling the ideals of such a successful company, but I just wish it had a more of an objective perspective. Every chapter reflects those principles, but it's almost so-on-the-nose, that I wondered if this was written by someone at the top of the ladder by Starbucks even if I read the author's bio. The book could've been an inspirational manual while still being more balanced and a lot less sugar-coated in repeating just how much and why Starbucks is such a success.

Yes, readers will understand how Starbucks sets itself apart and embedded itself into the world community. I will also have a new appreciation to Starbucks, especially their employees, and I don't think I'll walk into a store the same way. There's a gazillion stories about how Starbucks employees give out free coffee when they see a customer spill their drink or give out free coffee presses when a customer asks for a replacement part. Perhaps Starbucks—a successful business—can afford to absorb those costs, but there's very little relevance in those stories for some lesser-known, non-restaurant businesses.

Reward Yourself

For me, used to a military leadership style, it was much too fuzzy and vauge to use in my leadership toolbox. Also, it doesn't really help front-line workers much us grunts at the bottom because it's not very actionable to day-to-day rountine work.

Like, how is "Leave your mark" going to help you to make the 40 beverages you have sitting in your queue in the morning, smile at the customers, and remember all of their names?

Not so much. But if you're a manager looking for some motivation for you and your team, sure "Make it your own" makes sense.
