Starting in , she experienced several mystical encounters with Jesus, whom she called "the Voice," asking her to serve "the poorest of the poor. Prior to , Kolodiejchuk said little was known about Teresa's spiritual life. In a letter estimated to be from , Teresa wrote: The torture and pain I can't explain. Over time, the Rev. Joseph Neuner, a spiritual adviser, helped Teresa realize her feelings of abandonment only increased her understanding of the people she helped, Kolodiejchuk said.
Ultimately, she identified her suffering with that of Jesus, which helped her to accept it. Catholic saints typically experience a "dark night of the soul" in the words of 16th-century priest St. John of the Cross, Martin said, but never as long as the "whole working life" Teresa experienced.
It's another thing to believe that God doesn't exist," he said. How all this may affect her bid for sainthood remains unclear.
Some say it makes her even more impressive.
While her spiritual loneliness became known during the canonization process, Kolodiejchuk said this is the first time the arc of her inner spiritual life is compiled in one place in her own words. Gezim Alpion, the author of Mother Teresa: Saint or Celebrity?

Good book especially for someone who likes St. Teresa of Calcutta, and a how-to on love. Teresa of Calcutta's life is presented in this work in such a way that you feel like you can look inside her reasons for living a life of service to people who are abandoned and forgotten.
She wanted them to feel the love of Jesus Christ, an unconditional love. She believed that people acting their worst were just Jesus in disguise, and were worthy of her best self. She had relationships with people, not just well-meaning thoughts. Kerry portrayed this so well that you felt like you, the reader, were in this loving relationship. That made it devastating to find that Mother Teresa herself felt bereft of this unconditional love, with the exception of a few months when she felt the great warmth of it.
This experience of receiving the "lightning bolt" of God's unconditional love, and then perhaps never having that again, but still knowing the truth of it, has often been described. To a person such as St. Teresa, to whom love was up close and personal, the withdrawal of this warmth of Love in its physical presence seemed like being left in a cold desert.
Her saintliness resided in her acting in her relationships with the poor and poor in spirit until her final days, inspiring the whole world, while still suffering herself.
This book is a total cure for discontent!
