After all it is difficult to support the argument that the mere availability of information will automatically lead to an increase in organisational integration. Other approaches, such as the application of a knowledge-based system in the selection and effective implementation of manufacturing control systems [Z], although they provide a useful design tool, fail to recognise the benefits of a hybrid system that uses a combination of available planning and control tools and techniques.

It is also doubtful whether this process of designing manufacturing, planning and control MPC system is adequate for continuously changing market conditions.

Although these approaches have been very useful in MPC systems design, the question may be asked, whether it is possible to develop an approach in which the various aspects are considered in a balanced way resulting in a hybrid systems design capable of coping with the diversity of the market place.

In particular, emphasis is given in the procedure followed within stages of the methodology for the realisation and modelling of a conceptual design. The developed methodology [3], outlined in a later section, is based on the understanding that a MPC system should support the strategy and tactics pursued by the company and therefore the starting point is a business analysis and characterisation of the enterprise.
