What is irreplaceable, and unforgettable. Many cultures insist that love is eternal and destined. That might be an unfair expectation in the average lifespan, never mind true eternity.
It found a way, even after lethal separation and years of new life and afterlife. I like heaven in these terms, however complex. Brilliant read. May 16, Vaishali rated it it was ok Shelves: Interesting ideas Khong is given the canvas for a DeVinci, but draws with Crayola crayons.

This subjective view of the afterlife was surreal as her memories of her family and husband faded as the years wore on. I normally wouldn't include it in my challenge, however it is listed as a stand-alone short story and not part of a collection so here it is. This story is the emotional retelling of a young woman's experience in the afterlife after her untimely death the day after her wedding.
Amazingly profound and sad, I really appreciate Ms. Khong's ability to frame this story in the idea of memory and eternity, and wha Full disclosure, this is a short story I listened to on the podcast "Levar Burton reads".
Khong's ability to frame this story in the idea of memory and eternity, and what happens to us when there is no end to things but things keep going forever. I thought it was beautiful how the main character in the novel goes through the cycle of loss, grief, obsession and ultimately letting go. I also loved the ending which I won't spoil that sort of turns on this idea of memory and the concept that memory is often the meta-cognition of the memory itself. It's hard to elaborate without spoiling, however, given what happens at the end I think it is interesting how life or death in this case I suppose plays out when given an additional chance.
It made me feel sad and happy at the same time. Perhaps that is spoiling too much, but I really enjoyed this story. I look forward to reading more of Ms. Khong's work in the future! Really anyone should give this story a read or listen to if you follow Mr.

There's a quote I once read and no, I do not have the source sitting comfortably up my behind from whence I can just pull it that great poets and writers have enjoyed writing thousands of words depicting Hell and all its torments, but none of them has managed to describe a single afternoon in Heaven. This story attempts to do just that and you see why most people shy away from the attempt.
Sure, it has some interesting ideas and it is very well written without the confines of its premise. The problem is said premise. While reading it I kept thinking "Is this supposed to be Heaven? Doesn't sound very heavenly. In fact, after some time you'll start to forget them.
More titles to consider
No matter how much you will want to hold on, they'll slip away, leaving you miserable. Then there's the thing about everyone being 33 years, which is apparently a thing that some people really believe?
Which sounds okay if you're really old, but what if you're a teenager or a small child? Also, Heaven still has casual racism; consider yourself warned. All in all, with Heaven being so distinctly unheavenly, I'm really curious to see what Hell would be like.
