This book is an attempt to fill this gap. The authors define and identify different kinds of slum areas and analyse the factors in their emergence and growth in general.

They then give a graphic description of a squatters? In so doing, the authors attempt to bring out the inherent limitations of the conceptual frameworks of? Based on a classwise examination of the programmes and policies of slum clearance, improvement and control, they advocate a combination of several measures in the urban ideology of town planning and municipal development in favour of the urban poor and the establishment of a Gandhian ashrama type of settlement that will eventually lead to improved environmental conditions and community life in slums.

Although the slum has come to be regarded as a major problem of urbanization, there have been only a few full length studies of slums which give both insights into as well as a general picture of slum life. They then give a graphic description of a squatters slum Peta in the city of Vijayawada Andhra Pradesh in terms of social composition, demographic features of the slum-dwellers, patterns and causes of rural-urban migration, occupational structure and mobility, work organization of occupational groups and the slum-dwellers form part of the economic, political and social organization of the city.

In so doing, the authors attempt to bring out the inherent limitations of the conceptual frameworks of informal sector and culture of poverty in understanding the nature of the economic and social organization of slums. Both participant observation and survey methods have been used in this study and the result is a book rich in insights that should appeal to those interested in understanding and solving the problem of the urban poor.

Books in my Basket New Delhi, India. Akansha Publishing House, New Delhi, Published by Manohar Manohar, Until a few years ago our scholars evinced hardly any interest in either Babasaheb Dr Ambedkar or his work A biographical sketch here or a hagiographical tribute there were all that could be counted as Ambedkariana It was only in when the VP Singh government decided to celebrate his birth centenary that serious writings began to appear Their perusal however shows that though some of these writings have been done ably and faithfully yet an Ambedkar as full and complete as he was has not reached usThe present work comprising contributions by specialists on his life work and relevance is a serious endeavour to fill this gap pp.

From the preface: Past few years have witnessed nothing less than a flood of nucleic acid and protein sequence data. The management of these data would be impossible without computers. Bioinformatics is the combination of biology and information technology.

This applied branch of science deals with the computer-based analysis of large biological data sets. Bioinformatics incorporates the development of databases to store and search data, and of statistical tools and algorithms to analyze and determine relationships between biological data sets, such as macromolecular sequences, structures, expression profiles and biochemical pathways.

It is mainly used for Map genomes and identifies genes, to determine protein structure and simulate protein interactions, to discover new therapeutic targets and design medicines aimed at the targets and to assess the effects of virtual mutations on gene function. Computers are required in bioinformatics for their processing speed allowing repetitive tasks to be carried out quickly and systematically and for their problem-solving power.

The present book is an effort to provide introductory information on bioinformatics. Animal Biotechnology an overview. Principles of animal cell and tissue culture. Techniques of animal cell and tissue culture. Enzymes in genetic engineering Nucleic acid enzymology. Gene cloning vectors. Techniques for genetic engineering. Gene cloning gene transfer and expression of induced genes. Artificial animal breeding. Transgenic animal technology.

Subject Index. From the Preface Biotechnology as any technique that used living organisms to make or modify a product to improve plants or animals or to develop microorganisms for specific uses. The document focuses on the development and application of modern animal biotechnology based on new enabling techniques of animal tissue culture genetic and protein engineering enzyme and recombinant DNA technology gene cloning human and animal health production of anti microbial drugs the general manipulation of genes by selective breeding and techniques such as artificial insemination embryo transfer etc.

To date genetic progress in livestock breeding programmes has relied either on breed substitution or upon the traditional quantitative genetic approach of testing and selection. The rate of progress possible is dependent upon selection intensity and generation turnover. Actual progress is usually lower than that theoretically possible.Ranga Rao,M.
