I agree on all three of the above mentioned books. To understand non-realtime operating systems I recommend Andrew Tanenbaums book on "Modern Operating Systems" and "Linux Device Drivers", which is available online for free at oreilly.

Miro Samek's book is not for beginners. As the author, I just don't want anybody to get disappointed.

Building a Real Time Operating System: Description Real-time Operating Systems are an increasingly important tool, as integration of networking functionality, reliability, modularity, and complex multitasking become ever-more prominent concerns for embedded developers. However, mastering the many benefits offered by an RTOS can be challenging and time-consuming.

This practical new book from embedded software expert Colin Walls provides a perfect solution to that problem. It offers a readable and concise introduction to the world of real-time operating systems, providing readers with all the background they need to understand why an RTOS is helpful, how an RTOS can be used, and how an RTOS actually works.

The book first introduces all the main concepts of real-time programming and real-time operating systems, and then provides detailed, step-by-step instructions to implementing an RTOS, supported by thorough explanations of the included source code. Setting Priorities When programming an application, most operating systems of any type allow the programmer to specify a priority for the overall application and even for different tasks within the application threads. I searched on Google and Wikipedia has a list of RTOSs, but they are in random order and also I am not convinced that all of them really operating real-time.

To be considered "real-time", an operating system must have a known maximum time for each of the critical operations that it performs or at least be able to guarantee that maximum most of the time.
