Needless to say, the final PDF will come from XML with zero intervention. See why NPG, IOP The LATEX Companion, Second Edition ISBN: 6. I'm happy to announce that there is finally an eBook version of "The LaTeX Companion, 2ed" available. It was a rather challenging exercise due to the many .

More reference than exposition, I wore out a copy during my TeX formative years. Each concept and command is explained in a separate entry with many helpful examples.

Imagine a stripped-down and simplified The TeXBook.

LaTeX is composed of a central core of commands and then many, many, many packages. One warning: the current edition is so some of the material is out of date; nonetheless, this book is indispensible for the serious LaTeX style writer. Chapter 8 of the original printing had some problems, so it is available as a pdf download ; my thanks to b.

A perennial complaint leveled against TeX is that it has no built-in graphics component.

LaTeX Companion, The, 2nd Edition

While this is true, this fact may have contributed to the very rich variety of other tools that have been developed to meet this need. These include the standard graphics packages for including graphics files, metapost, pstricks using the power of Adobe's PostScript language , xy-pic very good for arrow-theoretic diagrams , and specialized packages for chemistry, physics, engineering, music, and chess, to name only a few.

Level: Intermediate Update: There is a new edition with a slightly different title.

I will review this edition shortly, but in the meantime here is the Amazon link. Topics include a quick introduction, creating bibliographies, marking up an index, including EPS graphics, and a very thorough presentation on typesetting mathematics including using all the neat AMSLaTeX alignments.

There are extensive symbol and command tables in the appendices and even some information on customization. If you want to focus on getting the paper written rather than tinkering with LaTeX in order to change its appearance, then this book is probably the only one you will ever need. Level: Intermediate The creator of TeX, Donald Knuth, wrote this, the original TeX manual, which many consider the best-written technical manual for any piece of software, ever.

It contains a complete description of the TeX language as well as much good advice on typographical style. The appropriateness of this book for the beginner has been the subject of much debate on Internet news groups.

When I learned TeX during the 's there were not many other sources around, so I was forced to learn from it.

As such, I learned TeX in a much deeper way than I might have otherwise. For the person who would rather write than program and wants a TeX introduction, there are better alternatives. But if you really want to understand what makes TeX tick, short of going to the TeX source code, there is no other choice than The TeXbook.

While it is possible to learn LaTeX from this book, I have found it more useful as a reference after learning LaTeX from another source. Mastering Floats. Understanding float parameters.

Float placement control. Extensions to LaTEX's float concept.

Inline floats. Controlling the float caption. Fonts and Encodings. Understanding font characteristics. Using fonts in text.

Using fonts in math. Standard LaTEX font support.

Preparing LaTeX Input Files for Any Computer

Acollection of font packages. The LaTEX world of symbols. The low-level interface.

Setting up new fonts. LaTEX's encoding models. Compatibility packages for very old documents. Higher Mathematics.

Display and alignment structures for equations. Matrix-like environments. Compound structures and decorations. Variable symbol commands.

Recommended TeX and LaTeX Books (and other printed resources)

Words in mathematics. Fine-tuning the mathematical layout. Fonts in formulas. Symbols in formulas. TEX and non-English languages. The babel user interface. User commands provided by language options.

Support for non-Latin alphabets. Originally we thought that anything other than plain PDF is not going to be possible; however as it turned out both ePub and mobi Kindle came out surprisingly well. Frank Mittelbach. Frank kindly provided me a copy of the ebook format, and as soon as I had the opportunity, the file was already in my tablet, ready for the TeX fun to start all over again.

In my humble opinion, all available formats ePub, Mobi and PDF are great and handle different situations. The book looks gorgeous specially on a high resolution tablet display.

In addition, there is a special promotion price really intended for those who already have the book, but effectively it can be used by anybody. I could do a review: David Carlisle. To apply the special promotion price, one needs to add the following code during the checkout processing on InformIT:.

Update 4: Update 2: I poked Frank about it. More news yet to come. Update 1: Friends, apparently the discount code is not working. I contacted Frank about it and hopefully this issue will be fixed as soon as possible.Inside, you will find: Expert advice on using LaTeX's basic formatting tools to create all types of publications--from memos to encyclopedias In-depth coverage of important extension packages for tabular and technical typesetting, floats and captions, multicolumn layouts--including reference guides and discussions of the underlying typographic and TeXnical concepts Detailed techniques for generating and typesetting contents lists, bibliographies, indexes, etc.

It was a rather challenging exercise due to the many examples in the book and the need to reproduce the example output faithfully on that media. However, if I may say so, an awful lot of work went into this book and its pages and I believe its normal price is actually worth it whether as hardcover or ebook so if you can afford it and you want to give something back to the authors Michel Goossens, Sebastian Rahtz Language: Enjoy -- Frank Older info kept for historians: Linking markup and formatting.
