I have my fair share of O'Reilly books. I got this to replace my old, worn 2nd edition. The back half of the 2nd edition is a concise, alphabetical API reference, easily identifiable by full-bleed markers at the top of those pages. The third edition spreads that content out among the topical chapters, making this update more of an abridged version of "Javascript: The Definitive Guide" than a quick reference.

For example, I tried to find any Date object method; the Date object entry in the index points to two pages that only mention it in passing, and none of the Date methods are included in the index.

Date object methods are used in several code examples, but nowhere are they properly documented. This 3rd edition simply cannot be used as the 2nd edition could be because it is not organized in a way that reflects the title or the precedent of prior editions.

A very disappointing misstep from this esteemed publisher and author. The strength of this book is the way each of the commands is organized so that there is a uniform way of presenting all the important information about each command. I agree with many other reviewers that state this book is not a "Pocket Reference". It is hard to find information. It isn't written in the same easy way that other Pocket References are written.

It seems to be a pared down version of the author's book on Javascript. Color me disappointed. I read this JavaScript pocket reference twice through in review for an exam, which I passed thanks to this book. It's not the most gripping or exciting read I was not expecting this.

This book is not a one-stop-shop for learning JevaScript.

You will still need to purchase another book that will walk you through the language in a more learning friendly manner. The first 52 pages explain the JavaScript language. It begins with the basics, such as syntax, variables, expressions, operators, statements, etc. The 54th page begins the alphabetical API reference, which extends to the end of the book on page Now, this book does not contain an index.

I can see this being an issue for some folks. Honestly, an index would be helpful for this book. For instance, what if you know a property or method, but can't remember what object contains said property or method? Normally, an index would point you in the right direction, but with this book, you either have to guess or go to another book or resource, such as Google. The lack of an index is not critical, but rather an inconvenience.

Overall, I am pleased with my purchase of this book and I'm glad I have it on my bookshelf for use when I need it.

I would recommend it for any JavaScript developer to have at hand. In the event you are interested, O'Reilly Media, Inc. They are sold for only a few dollars.

If you'd rather have an e-book version, that's the way to go. Of course, you can also purchase this book for the Amazon Kindle. One person found this helpful.

Not a quick reference anymore. Basically just a compact version of a longer Javascript manual. If you want a quick reference, and can still get the 2nd Edition, thats much better although it doesn't include the latest Javascript API. In fact, on page 11, they have a list of String methods, and tell you to refer to the reference section for complete details.

There is NO reference section though! The only API it actually even covers in detail is the Array object. Kindle Edition Verified Purchase. This book is really a great resource for those new to JavaScript. I carry this with me for my studies to become a front end web developer. Highly recommend. The concise format and small footprint of this book makes it the ideal quick reference on javaScript. I have the physical copy and the Kindle addition, and have made flashcards of each chapter in my Kindle edition. For further information relating to the legal issues contained in these Terms or problem reports regarding this service, please contact using the following: If you are a Job Seeker, please contact: support GovernmentJobs.
