Nick Cutter. The Human Division. Mr Mercedes. Doctor Sleep. The first story sets the stage for the mystery that lies at the very heart of the Silo Saga. Sheriff Holston is mourning his wife in that story; a worker in IT, she was one of the cleaners who was sent outside.

After a last trek up the spiral staircase, Holston locks himself into the holding cell and commands his deputy to bring the mayor saying, "I want to go outside. The story, unadvertised and spread only by word of mouth, was so popular that Howey wrote four more stories and novellas that combined, would become Wool.

The first story introduces us to the silo and its hierarchy. The second and third stories involve the search for Sheriff Holston's replacement by the Mayor and her deputy. The search takes them all of the way down into the bowels of the silo where the Mechanicals do their work keeping the lights on and the water flowing.

At the very bottom they find Juliette who is recruited to help police the silo. Wool is only the first of three novels in the Silo Saga. The second one, Shift , introduces us to the origins of the silo and the final one, Dust , wraps up the series. I had a few minor quibbles with some of the plotting, but overall enjoyed the trilogy.

Of course, this is not the first time that a writer has serialized a novel. Serializations go back as far as we have had periodic journals. Charles Dickens is one of the best known for his novels that were originally published in periodicals, beginning with The Pickwick Papers.

Nor it this the first time that an author has had to self-publish his work before a publisher would offer him a contract. Upton Sinclair's The Jungle , first appeared as a serial in the socialist newspaper Appeal to Reason, in He had to pay for the first printing of his book before Doubleday would publish a shorter version in But it is still rare for a novel to first appear as a serial, then be published in one format by its creator, and then be picked up by a publisher.

Although with the advent of e-books, the phenomenon is one we are likely to see more often. Hugh Howey's case is interesting because when his agent shopped his work, he did so with the clear understanding that Howey would retain the digital rights to his trilogy. Some publishers, unwilling to part with the immense profits in the electronic format, were willing to offer him seven-figure book deals for all rights.

Sci-Fi's Underground Hit. The day I got the contract for my second book. My first novel was with a small press.

It went great, but I started to think I could do the publishing bits on my own. The technology was there. The times were changing.

I had this great impatience to forge ahead on my own pace. Some manuscripts can be thought of as loss-leaders. The biggest disappointment I see from hybrid writers is that they go into a partnership thinking a major publisher knows more than they do about selling books.

How did you make that decision and what factors should authors consider? HUGH: I experimented. I tried Kindle Unlimited. Then I pulled out and went wide for a year.

Then I went back to Kindle Unlimited. I get more readers being in KU than being on all retail outlets. Amazon ebooks are available to every reader on pretty much any device that has a screen. If someone makes a personal decision not to shop with Amazon, then I lose that reader.

The Wool Trilogy

What are the findings that surprised you the most? And if you should share one piece of data with every author, what would it be? HUGH: The most surprising piece of data to me was how small the overall pie the Big 5 publishers have.

All the media coverage of the book business focuses on what these five companies report, but they pay out less than half of what authors make. So for authors or anyone who cares about authors to listen to coverage about the publishing industry, they are listening to a minority of that industry.

When we look at book prices, and total sales by publishing house, and earnings by retailers, all of that noise hides the fact that traditionally published authors take home a sliver of the sales. That is why the Big 5 can seem to rule the roost when it comes to earnings, but be insignificant when it comes to author pay. Here at GeekDad we wish him all the luck in the world and hope his success continues in Golden Son.
