In The 11th Commandment, Dr. David Trucker depicts his personal experiences as a practicing.

I was immediately attracted to the trade paperback's trippy 70s era cover and its not one but two! This book had everything I wanted from a religious post-apocalyptic dystopia written in the 60s: Catholic Mass or Massive Catholic Orgies check , Cl What a find! This book had everything I wanted from a religious post-apocalyptic dystopia written in the 60s: Catholic Mass or Massive Catholic Orgies check , Cliff hangers for nearly every chapter ending check , sexy sexy accidentally exposed ankles check , way too in depth reports of made up Cytology check, check, check.

All silliness aside, the prose is serviceable and the book runs along at a pace that keeps the stinking overrun ruins of catholicism surprisingly fresh. At this point I have been very tempted to put the word "surprisingly" in front of nearly every adjective I have used so far, but this book is surprising.

What immediately looks like a one note sexploitation novel from the early sixties is actually a sensitive and complicated exploration of religion, poverty, and scientific ethics.

Unfortunately the book also has some not so surprising flaws, many of which are not merely an indication of its time. The novel is overblown with side characters who I could not keep straight or care about, although the plot demanded I care very deeply about them. This book does not even clock in at pages but there must be over a dozen important named characters.

Despite this every female character, and there aren't many, is a pitiful baby hungry waif.

Books like this really highlight the power of Atwood's Handmaid's Tale. I can not help but feel that the main female character's story, small in scope as it was, would have been a more interesting and emotional exploration of this dystopia.

At the very least a female perspective would have saved the novel from its stupid ending. The last ten or so pages of this book are essentially lifted from Brave New World and have that same college philosophy essay feel to them, except in this case they are much shorter and even less convincing.

Christensen explores a way for those afflicted to heal. The Novel has been nominated for the Pulitzer Prize. Product details File Size: March 5, Sold by: English ASIN: Enabled X-Ray: Not Enabled. Share your thoughts with other customers.
