There's something about the depth of the material here, the insane level of illustration, that draws me to this book. My father has kept this book to hand for decades. He is the only person I know who's had the opportunity to apply a fraction of the knowledge contained in this tome.
This book explains how to do everything the old-fashioned way - and I do mean everything. You have to have held this book in your hands to get it. If a nu Every time I see this book at my parent's house, I pick it up. If a nuclear bomb went off I'd have this book in my shelter - heck, I could probably use it as a shelter. I'd love to leaf through it again! This book has it all - how to do everything from scratch. Build a home, raise livestock, plant a garden, amongst other things. If a bear mauls you, don't wash the wound out with peroxide.
You may end up having something unneccessarily amputated. For some reason that is the piece of advice that stuck with me from this book. This book tells you how to build your log cabin from scratch, how to find water in the desert, and loads of other useful things. Thank you, Matthew Petty.

To view it, click here. I grew up reading this book. It captured my deep desire for living off the land, using the things that surround you and keeping the older crafts alive. I still enjoy flipping through it to learn how to build a log cabin, extract honey from a hive, or how to plant and cultivate celery. It's a fabulous do-it-yourself guide on slowing down and doing for yourself. I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in living off the land!

A very influential book when I was young, it gives you surprisingly detailed instructions for making it on your own. Our family utilized nearly every part of this book, and we have all built upon its instructions.
If you like country living, this is a must-have manual when you are starting out. Learn everything from shearing sheep and putting up fences to building a house or barn, planting garden beds, or household repair.

The Basics The book is fairly easy to understand, there are some parts that are illustrated in great detail but they are not overly technical.
Survival Applications Back To Basics is written to assist people in being self sufficient and in homesteading, not survival. Favorite Part I remember going over to my great-grandparents house when I was younger and spending hours on end looking though this book.
Dislikes Some may argue that the information is out of date, but I think this just adds to the feeling of learning old fashioned skills. Overall Summary I found this book immensely useful. He loves handyman stuff.
But it is massively hard work that takes experience and good tools to do well. Hand-hewing a beam? Most novices would be hard pressed justifying the time cost of learning work an ax efficiently.
This book sounds like a good idea source, but some dedicated research into the particular topic would be needed before it became a wise investment of resources.

The book we had had a yellow cover, and the title in brown stencil lettering. I have a very old copy of The Encyclopedia of Country Living, written before it was professionally edited… very fun to read. Kris climbed into the tree first, but she chickened out. Let me at it. I did something similar this afternoon — in a year-old man sort of way — snagging all the gorgeous cherries.
Then, while Kris went inside to make some cherry preserves, I stayed outside to meet the new neighbors. I let them use my ladder to climb into the tree to pick fruit of their own. We chatted a little to get to know each other.I have a very old copy of The Encyclopedia of Country Living, written before it was professionally edited… very fun to read. Reply Frugal Dad says The book reminds me of the old Foxfire series—some great lessons on living off the land, etc. Throughout the book there are interviews with people that have applied the skills described and their experiences.
