6 Thinking Hats

What are we kindergarteners? Are we so bad at thinking and creative collectivity that we need to label hats to make sense of one another and listen to one another? Can't we use our own ability as coordinating social creatures to approach problems on our own from different angle So annoying! Can't we use our own ability as coordinating social creatures to approach problems on our own from different angles and different vantage points?

Do we need a book that is less than pages and probably could have been written in two tell us how to do this? Really guys? What kind of business world do we live in?

The theory and application are such that we put on different coloured hats where each colour relates to a specific characteristic of thinking. This will enable us to approach any problem comprehensively from multiple perspectives. The six thinking hats are: White Hat: Neutral and Objective — facts and figures Red Hat: Emotional, often anger Black Hat: Sombre and Serious. Point out weakness, negative Yellow Hat: Sunny and Positive. Optimistic and hopeful Green Hat: Creativity Blue Hat: Control and organisation of all the hats In meetings, it is often used to agree on a way forward while bringing everyone along on a shared vision.

The problem is that the Six Thinking Hats, in my experience, has created more polarisation, endless debate, and been unable to perform as a shared methodology. Not only because of the actual framework but because of those that buy into it and those that cannot.

It seemed that not only was the problem brought under scrutiny but also the methodology. Even if we argue that it requires focus, strong management and open-mindedness, the fact that it takes so much effort to get right, is in itself cause for major concern. I agree with and find value in the methodology but its application is not suited to all scenarios.

Switching to the red hat, I can't say I'm very excited about the collaborative thinking methodology described. If I were forced into a yellow hat, I'd say there may be some opportunity to use the hats as symbols in regular communication to indicate a certain thinking style is desired.

However, my black hat thinking immediately suggests that mentioning any colour hat to the uninitiated will only Starting off wearing my white hat, this book has only pages and did not take me long to read at all.

However, my black hat thinking immediately suggests that mentioning any colour hat to the uninitiated will only lead to endless discussions about the book and the method, and not aid the conversation in any way, thereby voiding any reasons to use the hat in the first place. Donning my green hat, perhaps this method would be more useful if taught in a workshop setting together with peers, so that the ideas can immediately be applied to real challenges.

Hats po cheese: In closing, under the protection of the blue hat, I can conclude I think the methodology described in the book is mildly interesting, but hardly as earth shattering as it is made out to be. There are six hats, each of which have different characteristics: This gets people thinking in different ways and since it is play-acting people are more willing to express views from under the security of the hat that otherwise may be left unsaid. Well, de Bono does rather like himself continually reminding us of his creations including the term "lateral thinking", but don't let that stop you from reading and understanding the six thinking hats directly from him. I've seen the concept used in ways it was not designed to be calling someone a "yellow hat thinker" for example.

The idea is that we ALL use all the hats and the concept is easy to understand although does take practice to administer. If it has been a while since you have read th Well, de Bono does rather like himself continually reminding us of his creations including the term "lateral thinking", but don't let that stop you from reading and understanding the six thinking hats directly from him.

If it has been a while since you have read this, or learnt about the method, I'd suggest having a read as you may find a really good use for six hat thinking at home, or work. Jan 21, Suresh rated it liked it. A good concept which could be captured in pages, but converted into full blown book!!

Mar 30, Heba Hassan rated it liked it. Jan 25, Syed Misbahuddin rated it it was amazing. It is not very big, it has pages and cost you only Rs. In a board of directors meeting, we usually act according to our personality and prejudice, but if we apply 6 hats method by wearing the hats or assuming its symbolic meanings we start to see within ourselves qualities of thinking we thought we did not possess.

Lesson 1: The blue hat helps you think about thinking and monitor processes at all times.

He has taken pains to highlight the drawbacks in bullet proofing the argument method, which is the normal western culture prevalent method everywhere since Socrates, Pluto etc. I can just see 15 people sitting instead of playing a game of one-upmanship and exploring their ego trips, they are all looking in the same direction and looking to solve the issue, it is always better to have 15 brains destroying a problem than one brain flip flopping to deal with it.

This is a fantastic liberating scientific concept. But according to common man me this concept has wide applications, Dr. Debono could not write about all of its applications in a small book of pages. Let me tell you this concept can be applied by College principals, school teachers, they put their minds together to make their school top of the nation, 6 hats can make a father apply this method to become best father of this world, 6 hats can make a wife apply this liberating science of thinking and she never has to stoop to conquer.

A municipal commissioner can apply it, with his staff, he can make his city the best in the world. It does not stop there a parliament can apply this concept and nobody will ever have to throw chairs or tables at the opposition, the parliament can make their country top of the world, this is a tool for better governance. A vision is seen in seconds and it takes a lifetime to find applications for it. Please understand the all genesis is an IDEA and will to apply it. This book teaches us a brand new way of thinking, it liberates our thinking from old responses and teaches us parallel thinking, I am not bothered about what name academically can be given to it.

The concept of 6 hats to me is a path breaker and path maker for individuals, groups.

I strongly recommend reading of 6 thinking hats to every citizen of our planet earth, practice its art of thinking, you will come out a better person, better son, better employee, better businessman, better president, better colonel, better general, better administrator and a better common man.

In our global world individual benefits do not count, they must be shunned like cancer looking at the full globe makes our problems many and much bigger to tackle, my home is where my globe is, as humans we have a duty to solve everything, after discovery of DNA we are made all equal and belonging to ONE SPECIES, move aside Dr.

Initially everything around us was a mere thought in its genesis. So think well. Jul 11, Shane rated it it was ok Shelves: I slogged my way through this book with much effort despite its abbreviated length. The core concept is an interesting one, and it involves a process to make meetings, brainstorming, and all sorts of collaborative efforts more organized and productive by helping the participants better organize the way they think so as not to get bogged down with unrelated minutia while trying to focus on another specific segment of the issue at hand.

Instead of anyone bringing up any sort of argument logical, e I slogged my way through this book with much effort despite its abbreviated length. Instead of anyone bringing up any sort of argument logical, emotional, factual, cautious, etc.

White hat thinking focuses on facts and figures, red hat thinking is purely emotional with no need for justification, the black hat represents caution, the yellow hat accentuates the positive, green is the hat of creativity and moving forward, and the final hat is blue, representing organization and order.

At its best, this method of thinking and collaborating can be a very effective tool for organizing options, weighing considerations, making decisions and conducting meetings with order and little conflict. I actually came across references to white- and black-hat thinking in a journalistic piece I read two or three days ago, and I knew what those terms meant without having to Google them.

Having identified the six modes of thinking that can be accessed, distinct programs can be created. These are sequences of hats which encompass and structure the thinking process toward a distinct goal. A number of these are included in the materials provided to support the franchised training of the six hats method; however it is often necessary to adapt them to suit an individual purpose.

Also, programs are often "emergent", which is to say that the group might plan the first few hats then the facilitator will see what seems to be the right way to go.

Sequences always begin and end with a blue hat; the group agrees together how they will think, then they do the thinking, then they evaluate the outcomes of that thinking and what they should do next.

Sequences and indeed hats may be used by individuals working alone or in groups. Example programs are shown below, each hat is typically used for approximately 2 minutes at a time — although at the start of a process an extended white hat session is common to get everyone onto the same page, and the red hat is recommended to be used for a very short period to get a visceral gut reaction — about 30 seconds, and in practice often takes the form of dot-voting. Speedo researchers are said to have tried the six thinking hats in the creation of swimsuits.

Typically, a project will begin with an extended white hat action, as facts are assembled.

Thereafter each hat is used for a few minutes at a time only, except the red hat which is limited to a very short 30 seconds or so to ensure that it is an instinctive gut reaction , rather than a form of judgement. This pace is believed to have a positive impact on the thinking process, in accordance with Malcolm Gladwell 's theories on " blink " thinking.

De Bono believed [8] that the key to a successful use of the Six Thinking Hats methodology was the deliberate focusing of the discussion on a particular approach as needed during the meeting or collaboration session. For instance, a meeting may be called to review a particular problem and to develop a solution for the problem.

The Six Thinking Hats method could then be used in a sequence to first explore the problem, then develop a set of solutions, and to finally choose a solution through critical examination of the solution set. The meeting may start with everyone assuming the Blue hat to discuss how the meeting will be conducted and to develop the goals and objectives. The discussion may then move to Red hat thinking in order to collect opinions and reactions to the problem. Next the discussion may move to the Yellow then Green hat in order to generate ideas and possible solutions.

Next the discussion may move between White hat thinking as part of developing information and Black hat thinking to develop criticisms of the solution set.

Because everyone is focused on a particular approach at any one time, the group tends to be more collaborative than if one person is reacting emotionally Red hat while another person is trying to be objective White hat and still another person is being critical of the points which emerge from the discussion Black hat.

The hats aid individuals in addressing problems from a variety of angles, and focus individuals on deficiencies in the way that they approach problem solving. Even with good courtesy and clear shared objectives in any collaborative thinking activity there is a natural tendency for "spaghetti thinking" where one person is thinking about the benefits while another considers the facts and so on.

The hats process avoids this. Everyone considers and all look in the same direction together. These can also be problems, or the benefits, or the facts, reducing distractions and supporting cross pollination of thought.

This is achieved because everyone will put on one hat, e. In this way all present think in the same way at the same time. The only exception is the facilitator, who will tend to keep the blue hat on all the time to make sure things progress effectively.

The hats are not a description but a way to look at things. They should not be used to describe thinking that has already taken place but they are directions in which to think next. Therefore, such methodology aids in better design. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. For the security hacker term, see BlueHat. This article needs additional citations for verification.
