Kate Cann has 31 books on Goodreads with ratings. Kate Cann's most popular book is Possessed (Rayne, #1). Possessed and Fire. These two books have just been given wonderful new covers and the names have been tweaked: I hope no one gets confused!. Rayne can't wait to start her summer job at Morton's Keep estate, but does its dark past, portend her dark future?.

She must fight to find out the truth, and be brave in facing up to who she really is And Rayne and Ethan are very much thrown together Daily Telegraph: Dark and gothic with plenty of hidden secrets.

But the new management at the Keep seems connected to new violence in the area, and the mystic-mythic Green Lady reenlists an unwilling Rayne to restore order.

Two gorgeous boys add palpable sexual tension heightening interest. The result is irresistible.

I love the way Kate Cann creates such credible contemporary settings, conflicts and characters yet infuses her story with a passion for the natural world, a convincing sense of centuries of history, strands of earthy magic and paganism. A brilliant story full of intense emotions and creepiness with a tint of the supernatural.

It was a marvellous read even if it did make my heart race all the way through it and put me on the edge of my seat. I really want to know what happens next, I can't wait for the sequel. I finished the book in less than two days, as did my friend who eagerly read it after me.

Rayne is working alongside Ethan, and the rest of the fire boys, to stop St.

The psychological and terror aspects of Possessed remind me a bit of a younger The Haunting of Hill House , with Rayne and Eleanor as these dual, tragic heroines. I also loved the creeping, oppressive dread of the atmosphere at the isolated country estate.

While Rayne finds the peace and freedom she so desperately desires, she also knows terror as there is clearly something very wrong with the mansion and the locals. For the majority of the novel, this tension and slow simmering fear is expertly built, leading to a number of dramatic questions and unknowns.

There are visions and ghosts, riddles and betrayals, dark family secrets and pagan rituals — all are revealed tantalizingly as each chapter unfolds, leading to a dramatic conclusion. Unfortunately, while the characters, buildup and atmosphere are all fantastically rendered, the book stumbles in its final act, hastily trying to resolve the overall mystery with a fairly contrived Big Bad Villain Monologue.

I wish that Ms. Cann had taken the same amount of time to unveil the solutions to the mysteries throughout the book since they were so brilliantly planted and nurtured in the early chapters, but alas. While the ending was rushed and lacked the finesse of the rest of the novel, I still found this book highly enjoyable and spine-tingly in all the right ways. Additional Thoughts: Book 2, with an equally gorgeous cover, has also been released in the US this year. And when a new manager shows up, things take an even more sinister turn.

I have book 2 in my greedy, eager clutches and cannot WAIT to read it. Thanks for the encouragement! I loved the second one.

No one except her new group of friends, that is. Who can she trust to tell her the truth?

And how can she keep herself safe from it? To me, the most frightening arena is inside the mind.

I wanted to explore that, and the fear of the not-known, in this book. I wanted to look at what would happen when a town-girl is transplanted to a remote place where nights are pitch black and nature dominates.

Rayne is deeply drawn to the woods, but she hears strange stories about them, and the mysterious fire people. She must fight to find out the truth, and be brave in facing up to who she really is And Rayne and Ethan are very much thrown together Daily Telegraph: " Dark and gothic with plenty of hidden secrets.
