The language might be difficult for some people. Speed was English, and wrote this book at the turn of the last century. All work is a product of its time to an extent, and there are some passages that are a little embarrassing to read, and some ideas that no longer carry much weight.

There is zero author ego. But more than any of the other books here, it allows you to grow as an artist and as an individual. This book can also be downloaded for free.

Whilst all of the drawing exercises in the book are available elsewhere, and the idea of right brain drawing is oversimplified and slightly gimmicky, this is still a great book.Its a natural impulse to try and go as quickly as possible. The way this idea applies in making sure that the drawing looks like the person in front of you is in getting the measuring correct.

As you study, work on a particular portion at a time. This is the only way to live if you wish to have something to say. If you ever hear somebody refer to a 5 value theyre talking about a middle value between light and dark, regardless of how many values youve broken the drawing into.
