Great resource for learning about rocks and minerals By Kindle Customer If you want to learn about rocks and minerals, this is the book for you. It is designed as a college textbook, but it is the best book available on the subject for the general reader: beautifully illustrated, concisely written, and comprehensive.

It includes a good overview of earth science chapters 1, 2, 3 , as well as excellent chapters on economic minerals, earth materials, and the impacts of earth materials on human health chapters 15, 16, I don't want to imply that some of the chapters will hold the interest of the general reader, but it is certainly worth glancing at the chapters on the identification and formation of igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks in the middle of the book.

The pictures and diagrams are simply superb: you will not find better examples of rocks and minerals elsewhere, even in rock and mineral guidebooks. I recommend the paperback edition--it is sturdy and priced right.

And check out the web site, which has some neat features and supporting information. This book is fantastic!

By Amazon Customer I've been looking for a book like this for a long time. I collect rocks and minerals and am interested in geology, but most the textbooks are too technical and too expensive.

I wanted to know how minerals form, what their make up is, how they differ from rocks, etc. This book explains that, and is written well. The photos are gorgeous!

I'm not a student, but I'm very interested in what the earth is made of.

Intelligence Analysis for Tomorrow: Advances from the Behavioral and Social Sciences

The title of this book grabbed me and has held me interested to read every page. If you are interested in rocks and minerals, and geological processes, this book is for you.

Each chapter contains links to Web sites offering software programs, animations and images of rocks samples hand specimens and thin sections. Each chapter ends with references for further reading material for a deeper coverage of the subject. An index and a glossary are given at the end of the book for additional references.

This textbook will allow the reader to acquire in a course semester all the basic information needed to describe and understand how rocks form. The background developed in the early chapters on crystal structures, crystallography, how to used a petrographic microscope… is dense but the explanations are clear and well illustrated.

The authors chose to present the systematic mineralogical description simultaneously with the type of rocks in which these minerals occur.

Advances in Materials Science and Engineering

I think that this is a very good idea: The addition of a new chapter dedicated to thermodynamics and kinetics processes that did not appear in the first edition will allow the students to understand more the processes involved in the formation of rocks, and how to determine their ages.

This new chapter will be fundamental by providing a global view on petrology. The uses of minerals in commercial applications are outlined throughout the book, and even the penultimate chapter focuses on some selected examples of Earth material resources that are used in everyday life.

Finally, the last chapter discusses the beneficial and negative effects these Earth materials can have on human health. Earth Sciences Explorer 1.
