By the way, the Archives is mostly staffed with zombies. Character creation is fairly normal, except for the fact that you roll six-sided dice for your attributes. Usually I would think this is best left to retro-gaming or uninformed and ill-fated game design, but it kind of makes sense in a Men In Black way, where things are a little tongue-in-cheek and the denizens of The Laundry come in all shapes, sizes, and capabilities. Still, I must ask why, in the age of role-playing enlightenment, there must exist die-roll attributes for a game like this.

Other concerns in character creation include a set of personality types that you choose from, in addition to a profession you held prior to service, both of which give you bonuses in certain skills, then on top of that you choose or roll for an assignment within the department, which will give you further bonuses in skills.

It does, however, force you to make a character that has both a past and present, instead of making a character in the present and then just making up whatever details about his or her past you want. So, your character is probably going to be sent out to investigate the occult, which will probably involve some sort of horrible monster or cult or possession.

Combat is pretty simple.

This book is really big, even for a core book, and a lot of it is dedicated to setting information and general information about the feel of the game. Whether it be sections on organizations inside and outside Laundry itself, similar organizations from other countries, an employee handbook, notes on game mastering and playing, whatever.

There is just tons of stuff in here to read, and I think any fan of the books would enjoy it immensely. Okay, so is the game interesting or not? I think if you have found the concept intriguing thus far, you will definitely enjoy this game. I get the feeling that Simon Pegg would fit perfectly in this game world as a Laundry agent.

Also, if you are a fan of conspiracies, I think this game has a lot to offer. The discussions of the various organizations and how they interact constantly references real world history and claim that this or that shady group or supernatural force was behind it.

This game has the potential to have such an interesting atmosphere at the table, as moments of horror and moments of outright ridiculousness seem like they could burst forth at any moment. Overall, this game seems like a lot of just plain fun. Nonetheless, I would definitely recommend this game to anyone who likes the concept, and definitely if you are into dark humor, British humor, crime drama, conspiracies, Lovecraft, and zombies.

How could you not? As a civil servant in the UK, I know just what bureaucracy is like, and this game nails it, but brings with it the brilliant combination of black humour and Cthulhu.

The quality of the game is exceptional, with it perfectly representing the setting of The Laundry in Charles Stross' novels. While most of the fonts are the same, there are 'paper-clipped' photos and annotations in different paper types and fonts to reinforce that feeling.

The style of writing is clear and clean, with a mixture of exposition and explanation and just enough of the humor and informality to be The Laundry. It doesn't dip into Stross's tendency to throw sink-or-swim bits of espionage telling detail or mathematical esoterica that work so well in the fiction, but would leave gamers screaming bloody murder. However, there are some modifications and additions to that process. I like it, because it makes attributes faster than the old method of referring to the Resistance Table which still exists, but only for instances with opposing difficulties.

This fits in with the Laundry getting people from all walks of life and backgrounds, and then shoehorning them into the org because they know too damn much about the wrong things. Possessions -- you get some default equipment based on your work in the Laundry and your various skillsets. Chapters Nine, Twelve, and Thirteen give great starting background material for folks unfamiliar with U. Chapters Nineteen and Twenty-One define some pretty important code words in the Laundry setting: Chapters Ten, Eleven, and Fifteen share some of the gear and flavor of working in an occult espionage agency plagued by modern views of bureaucratic best practice.

Chapter Fourteen is a welcome chapter, as it deals with magic.

Devotees of the series know that magic isn't as per traditional Cthulhu spellcrafting goes -- there's a layer of mind-straining electromagnetic and mathematical theory on it.
